So I’m going to do my best impression of my colleague Tom Breihan’s Number Ones column in an attempt to explain what has transpired here. It’s a very strange story, and my appreciation for it is inversely proportional to my hopes of ever hearing Måneskin’s godawful rendition of “Beggin'” ever again. So, how did an Italian rock band’s unlistenable cover of a 1967 Four Seasons hit, released on an EP in 2017, become the biggest song in the world on Spotify in the summer of 2021? It has to do with TikTok, of course, but also the Eurovision song contest, and I guess the perversity of fate. Before you declare this a victory for rock, consider that Måneskin’s “Beggin'” cover is just atrociously, offensively bad - a jittery, feral scat attack that I refuse people are listening to for non-ironic reasons.

It even cracked Billboard‘s Hot 100, becoming the first Måneskin song to do so, almost entirely on the strength of streaming. For the past week, their version of the Four Seasons’ “Beggin'” - a cover Måneskin released four years ago - has been #1 on the global Spotify chart and a mainstay of the US top 10.

Her work has become part of critical private and public collections, including Queen Elizabeth II and the V&A Museum in London and has featured in numerous publications.īorn in Czechoslovakia, Míla gained an MA degree in Art, English Language and Psychology at Charles University in Prague, whilst simultaneously studying for her BA degree in Fine Art Printmaking at the University of Gloucestershire. During this time, she has won 14 prestigious awards. Míla’s mid-career retrospective at the Czech Centre’s Vitrínka Gallery charts the course from Míla’s graduation from the Royal College of Art, to her becoming the youngest ever elected Academician at the Royal West of Academy in Bristol, being collected by the V&A and Her Majesty the Queen, to her commission by Coldplay and finally the creation of “All the Rivers That Flow Through Me”, selected from ten thousand artworks to represent the Summer Exhibition online by the Royal Academy of Arts.
